College PlanningSeniors planning to attend a four-year college should be ready to apply in the fall, and have any SAT/ACT requirements met by November. Students planning to attend Folsom Lake College should start listening for announcements in January about applying to Folsom Lake, and plan to take assessment tests in February or early March. Students planning to attend out-of-area community colleges should begin investigating application dates and testing options in January. As always, come to the career center with any questions. General focus by grade levelSeniors: Make sure to meet all college deadlines. Take (or retake) your SAT/ACT by November. Check your email regularly and read it thoroughly. Most colleges nowadays give you a portal (MySacState, eServices, etc.), check those weekly. Follow through by sending colleges all requested information, & be on time. Fill out the FAFSA & the Cal Grant GPA form before the earliest financial aid deadline of all the colleges applied to, and well before March 2nd. Keep your grades up. Apply for scholarships. Juniors: Volunteer & be involved. Consider taking on a leadership role in one of your activities. Visit colleges during holiday breaks when possible. Complete the bridges.com interest survey again. Make sure you have a "professional" email address. Take the SAT and/or ACT this spring - sign up early to get a good test location. New for Class of 2012: You are no longer required to take the SAT subject tests to get into a UC campus, although there may be circumstances that make it advantageous for you to do so anyway. For clarification, click here. Freshmen & Sophomores: Volunteer. Be involved in a school or off-campus activity that inspires you. Explore bridges.com for career ideas and take the interest survey again. Keep a file of all honors, awards & volunteer service - even a scrawled post-it note will help you later in building a resume or filling out an application.
